You Can Now Generate Podcast-Style 'Audio Overviews' Directly in Gemini App
Last year, Google introduced a fascinating feature within its experimental NotebookLM product that quickly gained popularity. This feature utilized AI technology to transform any uploaded document into a two-person conversational podcast. While these podcasts were not intended for public sharing, they served as valuable learning aids, presenting information in a conversational format that can often make concepts easier to grasp.
Now, Google's AI-generated podcasts, known as Audio Overviews, are readily accessible for free directly within the Gemini app and website. Integrated seamlessly into Gemini, users can take advantage of Gemini's Deep Research reports as sources for their podcasts.
How to Start Generating Audio Overviews
To begin using this feature, simply navigate to the Gemini website or open the Gemini app. Upload your preferred document or slide show by clicking the Plus button and selecting the file. Once the file is processed, a Generate Audio Overview button will appear. Click on this button and wait for Gemini to create the podcast audio, which typically takes 3–5 minutes depending on the complexity of the content.
Alternatively, you can request Gemini to generate a report for you using the Deep Research option below the text box. After a brief waiting period, access the Deep Research document, click the down-arrow icon, and then select the Generate Audio Overview button. You can also input "Generate Audio Overview" directly into the text box.
Listening to Your Audio Overview
Upon completion of the processing, you will receive a notification on the Gemini website or app. A playback player will appear in the chat box. Click the Play button to start listening and utilize the seek bar to navigate through the recording. While you can adjust the playback speed up to 1.5x, you'll typically receive a detailed podcast overview even from lengthy documents.
If you prefer to listen to the podcast later or share it with others, you can download the audio for offline playback. Simply click the three-dot menu button in the audio player and select the Download option. Additionally, you can opt to share your Gemini chat and recording via a link by choosing the Share conversation feature. Moreover, within Gemini, users can explore creating their custom AI Bots, known as Gems, which are now freely available to everyone.
