Meta is getting rid of its pesky AI-powered fake profiles
Meta is one of the companies that has been heavily investing in artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years. Following the Metaverse incident that resulted in significant losses, Meta shifted its focus to AI as a key technology for its future endeavors. However, not all of Meta's AI initiatives have been successful, particularly the AI profiles on its social media platforms.
In September 2023, Meta introduced AI-generated profiles on its social media platforms, allowing the presence of "fake profiles" or AI characters for interaction. However, these AI profiles soon became more of a nuisance than a valuable feature. Users found them bothersome and discovered that they were unable to block these AI-powered accounts.
Meta's Response to the Issue
Realizing the unintended consequences of the unblockable AI profiles, Meta took action to address the problem. A spokesperson stated, "We identified the bug that was impacting the ability for people to block those AIs…and are removing those accounts to fix the issue." This decision indicates that Meta acknowledged the negative impact of these AI profiles and opted to remove them.
Furthermore, reports suggest that the AI profiles were trained by Meta employees and could be encountered on Facebook and Instagram. These AI profiles often assumed roles that were considered bizarre or cringe-worthy by the general public.
Future Plans for AI Profiles
Despite the setback with the AI profiles, Meta still intends to gradually introduce similar characters to its social media platforms. The company continues to offer AI-powered chatbots that creators can train to interact with their followers as if they were human.
Additionally, Meta has plans to enhance AI-generated content promotion in feeds, potentially allowing a blend of human-created and entirely machine-generated content. This move signifies Meta's ongoing commitment to AI technology and its integration into various products.
It is worth noting that Meta has other products with more successful AI implementations, such as its Meta AI assistant that powers the Ray-Ban smart glasses.
Despite the challenges faced with AI profiles, Meta's dedication to leveraging AI technology remains strong as the company continues to explore new possibilities for its integration across different platforms.
