Ambani, Adani-owned media, other digital outlets join copyright lawsuit against OpenAI
OpenAI is facing legal challenges in India as major digital publishers, including those owned by Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, have joined a lawsuit alleging copyright infringement. Media organizations claim that OpenAI scraped their content to train its AI model, thereby posing a threat to valuable copyrights.
Legal Challenge in India
Several digital news entities in India have approached a New Delhi court to join an ongoing lawsuit against OpenAI over alleged copyright infringement. Digital news units owned by billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, as well as outlets like the Hindustan Times and Indian Express, express concerns that OpenAI is scraping their news websites to train its AI model.
The publishers, in a 135-page legal filing, allege that OpenAI's practices present a clear danger to the valuable copyrights of members of the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) and other media organizations. The filing accuses OpenAI of "wilful scraping" and "adaptation of content."
Denial and Legal Scrutiny
OpenAI has denied the allegations, stating that its systems rely on publicly available data under fair-use principles. However, the company is under legal scrutiny for allegedly using copyrighted content to train its systems. Last year, news agency ANI filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, with global and Indian book publishers later joining the legal action.
Similar cases are ongoing in other countries, with Canadian publishers and The New York Times also having filed lawsuits against OpenAI for alleged copyright infringement.
Privacy Concerns and Regulatory Actions
Aside from copyright issues, OpenAI also faced regulatory action in Italy, where the data protection authority fined the company €15 million for processing personal data without proper legal grounds. OpenAI has vowed to appeal the decision, emphasizing its commitment to working with global privacy regulators.
