The incident occurred when Barry Smethurst requested the contact number of a railway office via WhatsApp, but the AI gave him the number of James Gray, a 44-year-old executive from Oxfordshire. For months, the AI denied that the number was real, claiming it was made up and “fictitious.”
Meta has stated that the AI has not been trained to use private user data and that the published number is available in the public domain. The company is working with partners to reduce AI "hallucinations" and increase the reliability of virtual assistants. The incident raises important questions about security and privacy in the use of AI, adding to concerns about the potential risks of sharing sensitive data such as banking information or personal data.
