Elon Musk's Tesla humanoid Optimus says hardest part of being a robot
At the We, Robot event, Elon Musk presented a vision of the future that included self-driving cars and humanoid robots. One of the highlights of the event was the introduction of the Tesla Optimus, a humanoid robot that Musk described as capable of doing anything you can imagine.
During the event, Optimus showcased various skills such as walking, dancing, holding objects, waving, and speaking. However, the most intriguing part came after the demonstration when the humanoid robots were allowed to interact with attendees. One particular conversation between Optimus and a human stood out when Optimus was asked, "What is the hardest part of being a robot?"
After a moment of contemplation, Optimus responded in a surprisingly human manner, saying, "Trying to learn how to be a human like you guys." The delivery of the response was remarkably human-like, complete with hand gestures, highlighting Optimus's ability to mimic human behavior.
Understanding Human Conversations
Optimus demonstrated an understanding of human conversational nuances, such as taking pauses between sentences, grasping context, asking follow-up questions, and engaging in small talk. The humanoid even turned towards the camera and the human participant, mirroring human behavior in an attempt to connect with both parties.
In another instance, Optimus showcased its familiarity with human activities by engaging in a game of rock, paper, scissors with a user. Despite humans prevailing in the game, Optimus displayed good sportsmanship by commending the opponent's skills.
Optimus' Capabilities
Elon Musk envisions Optimus as a versatile companion that can assist with various tasks, including walking your dog, babysitting, lawn mowing, and serving drinks. Musk believes that the robot's capabilities are virtually limitless and predicts a price range of $20,000 to $30,000 for the product.
While Optimus is still in development, Tesla continuously releases updates to showcase the robot's progress. The latest Gen 2 model represents a significant advancement in the robot's evolution, bringing it closer to Musk's vision of a humanoid assistant that can seamlessly integrate into daily life.
Implications of Humanoid Technology
The integration of humanoid robots like Optimus raises questions about the boundary between human and artificial intelligence. Just as the introduction of human-like voice mode in AI models like ChatGPT by OpenAI sparked concerns, the lifelike behavior exhibited by Optimus blurs the line between human and machine.
