Finance Ministry asks employees to avoid AI tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek
The Finance Ministry has issued an internal advisory urging its employees to refrain from using AI tools, including ChatGPT and DeepSeek, for official purposes. The ministry cited concerns regarding the confidentiality of government documents and data in the advisory.
Countries like Australia and Italy have also implemented similar restrictions on the usage of DeepSeek due to potential data security risks associated with such AI tools. The advisory from the Finance Ministry, dated Jan. 29, highlighted the potential risks posed by AI tools and apps installed on office computers and devices.
According to three officials from the Finance Ministry, the authenticity of the advisory was confirmed, and it was circulated internally this week. However, there has been no confirmation regarding whether similar directives have been issued to other ministries in India.
OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is currently embroiled in a copyright infringement dispute with top media houses in India. The company has stated in court filings that its servers are not located in India, and therefore, Indian courts should not have jurisdiction over the matter.
Representatives for the Finance Ministry, OpenAI, and DeepSeek have not responded immediately to requests for comments on the advisory.
