Meta Begins Testing AI-Generated Comments on Instagram
In recent years, Meta has introduced various AI features across its platforms, including experiments with AI-generated characters that had their own profiles and personalities. However, these initiatives were eventually abandoned due to being perceived as unsettling and unnecessary.
AI to Enhance Interactions on Instagram
In a new move that may spark mixed reactions from users, Meta is now exploring the use of AI to improve interactions among friends by assisting them in composing comments on Instagram. Users like Jonah Manzano, who actively tests new social media features, stumbled upon a new feature labeled “Write with Meta AI” on Instagram, which offers AI-generated suggestions for comments on posts.
Participants in the testing phase will notice a pencil icon next to the comment box under a post, allowing them to access Meta AI for generated suggestions. Meta AI analyzes the content of the image and provides three comment recommendations based on its analysis. For example, if the photo depicts someone smiling and giving a thumbs-up in their living room, Meta AI could suggest comments such as “Love the cozy atmosphere” or “Great photo shoot location.” Users have the option to refresh for additional suggestions if the initial ones do not resonate with them.
A spokesperson from Meta informed TechCrunch via email, stating, “We are consistently testing new features to enhance user interactions with Meta AI across our platforms. In addition to direct messages, Meta AI will be available for comments, feeds, groups, and searches, aiming to make interactions more enjoyable and meaningful."
Reactions to AI-Generated Comments
While Meta has not disclosed specific details regarding the widespread availability of this testing feature, the company mentioned that a similar experiment with AI-generated comments was conducted on Facebook last year. This new AI feature may not sit well with users who prefer to keep Instagram comments free from AI influence, especially those who value authentic feedback over AI-generated replies. Many users long for the days when Instagram felt more genuine and less performative, making the introduction of AI comments appear inauthentic and unnecessary.
As with any test feature, the timeline for a potential broader rollout of this AI-generated comment feature remains uncertain. It is worth noting that Meta previously dabbled in AI-generated comment summaries on Facebook, showcasing the company's ongoing exploration of AI technologies in social interactions.
