10 Groundbreaking Features of Amazon's New AI Chatbot Metis

Amazon Reportedly Developing In-House Answer to ChatGPT

Amazon is reportedly developing its own artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The project, code-named “Metis,” is inspired by the Greek goddess of wisdom.

The chatbot, powered by an in-house AI model called Olympus, is built to provide text-based and image-based answers in a smart, conversational fashion. It can share links to the source of its responses, offer follow-up questions, and generate images. Sources familiar with the matter reveal that Olympus is a more powerful iteration than Titan, Amazon’s existing AI model. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is reportedly personally involved in the project.

Advancements in AI Technology

Amazon’s new chatbot, Metis, aims to employ an AI technique known as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). This technique allows the chatbot to generate more up-to-date and accurate replies. Unlike traditional chatbots, Metis will be capable of offering real-time information such as the latest stock prices, thanks to the implementation of RAG.

RAGs represent a significant advancement in AI technology by combining information retrieval with natural language generation. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize AI by enabling access to specific external data sources, making responses more effective and precise.

The Impact of RAGs on AI Evolution

Renat Abyasov, CEO of Wonderslide, believes that the use of RAGs offers a substantial advantage over traditional large language models (LLMs). While LLMs have improved various AI applications, their tendency to generate false information has limited their potential. In contrast, RAGs provide owners with more control over their proprietary datasets, resulting in more targeted and reliable applications.

Amazon’s Jassy foresees that AI technology will play a crucial role in driving revenue growth for the company in the coming years. He stated during an earnings call that AI, particularly Gen AI, will be a primary focus for Amazon, leading to the reinvention of customer experiences and processes. Jassy believes this focus on AI innovation will generate substantial revenue for Amazon in the foreseeable future.
