You can now replace Gemini with ChatGPT on your Android phone
You have the option to make ChatGPT your default assistant on Android, effectively replacing Gemini. By doing so, you can easily engage ChatGPT's voice mode by long-pressing the power button or swiping up from the screen's corner. It's worth noting that unlike Gemini, ChatGPT for Android is unable to control system settings.
Enhancements in Gemini by Google
Google has been consistently enhancing Gemini, with recent updates including the transition of several features from its Advanced paid tier to the free version. However, if you're looking to explore other AI-powered chatbots on Android, you have alternatives. Earlier this year, Perplexity introduced its Android app, providing an option to replace Gemini on your Android device. Now, with the latest app update from OpenAI's ChatGPT, you can also replace Gemini with ChatGPT on your Android phone.
Setting ChatGPT as the Default Assistant
As reported by Android Authority, the latest beta release of ChatGPT (v1.2025.070 beta) allows you to designate the app as the default assistant on your Android device. After installing the newest beta version, navigate to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app, and choose ChatGPT instead of Google to replace Gemini with OpenAI's assistant on your phone.
Limitations of ChatGPT on Android
While ChatGPT may excel over Gemini in specific scenarios, it has certain limitations on Android. Despite being set as the default assistant, ChatGPT is unable to manage Google Home devices, adjust system settings, or perform similar tasks. Additionally, functionalities such as controlling Spotify music playback or adding calendar entries to Google Calendar are not supported by ChatGPT.
It's important to note that even after replacing Gemini or Google Assistant, invoking ChatGPT with a hotword on your device is not supported. The phrase "Hey, Google" will continue to activate Gemini. Despite these constraints, if you favor ChatGPT over Gemini, you now have the option to set it as the default assistant on your phone for an enhanced experience. As this feature is currently in the beta channel, future releases from OpenAI may address numerous limitations.
