Google is now calling Gemini's extensions as 'apps' - SamMobile
Google’s GenAI-powered virtual assistant, Gemini, can work with various first-party, as well as third-party services and apps, such as Google Maps and Spotify, with the help of their extensions. Google has now decided to stop calling them extensions and renamed them as 'apps'.
Google's App Renaming
As spotted by 9To5Google, in the latest beta version of the Google app for Android (version 16.8), Gemini’s extensions are now referred to as ‘apps’. The change can be noticed in the account menu and the page for accessing the extensions. However, the icon for ‘Apps’ still resembles extensions.
Further, the change is also live on Gemini for the web. Clicking on the settings icon in the bottom-left of the page now shows ‘Apps’ instead of ‘Extensions’. The icon for ‘Apps’ also resembles extensions, indicating a quick implementation by Google without much visual distinction.
There is no official information provided by Google regarding the reason for this renaming decision.
Expanding Gemini's Capabilities
Gemini now collaborates with Samsung’s services and apps on Galaxy devices, offering compatibility with Samsung Calendar, Samsung Clock, Samsung Notes, and Samsung Reminders. This integration allows users to perform a wider range of tasks using the AI assistant. Additionally, Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series is set to receive Gemini’s live video and screen sharing features for free in the near future.
Furthermore, Google has introduced Wear OS 5.1, a new operating system for smartwatches based on Android 15. This update succeeds Wear OS 5, which was based on Android 14, and is currently being rolled out to the Pixel Watch 1.
Google also introduced Live Updates notifications with the latest beta release of Android 16, with Google Maps being the first app to support this feature. Users can now experience Live Updates notifications on Android phones, including their appearance on Samsung devices with Now Bar.
In another development, Google is planning to release the next version of Android, Android 16, earlier than usual, with a projected launch in June. This decision was confirmed by a Google spokesperson, indicating that the company is on track for the upcoming release.
At MWC 2025, Google is showcasing new features for the Gemini app for Android, including live video and screen sharing, which will be rolled out to Google One AI Premium subscribers later this month.
