How ChatGPT Works
The "GPT" in ChatGPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer. These pre-trained models are the key to understanding how ChatGPT operates.
ChatGPT is an AI generative model – it can generate text, code, images, and audio. Other examples of generative AI include image tools like DALL-E or text-to-speech machines.
Before ChatGPT, AI models were built with supervised learning, where inputs and outputs were explicitly labeled and taught to map them together. This process was slow as datasets had to be curated by humans.
With GPT models, they are exposed to large datasets they are trained on, learning language patterns and meanings contextually from various sources.
Evolution of ChatGPT
OpenAI developed LLMs GPT-2 and GPT-3, leading up to GPT-3.5 where these models started to power ChatGPT.
Released in November 2022, GPT-3.5 marked the introduction of ChatGPT to the world. The Turbo 2023 update improved the accuracy of ChatGPT responses, even though it used a similar model to 3.5.
In March 2023, a more advanced model was launched. Compared to GPT-3, GPT-4 is more powerful and better optimized. It also introduced ChatGPT Plus for premium users.
OpenAI unveiled a version of GPT-4 with a much larger context window than the previous version in November 2023.
GPT-4o, released in May 2024, is the first true multimodal LLM system from OpenAI. The 'o' stands for 'omni', denoting the model's ability to analyze and generate text, images, and sound.
Latest Developments
The most recent release from OpenAI is the new o1 line, launched on September 12, 2024, after much anticipation.
The o1 models are the first LLMs that claim to reason through a longer and more comprehensive chain of thought to analyze requests.
Applications of ChatGPT
One of the most common requests for ChatGPT is content creation – from blog posts to status updates on Facebook, HR emails to birthday poems for friends, it does it all.
You can ask ChatGPT to create full content, request inspirational ideas, or co-write an output by providing chatbot bits and asking it to complete the task. And the good news is: you are not constrained by copyright laws when using content generated by ChatGPT.
