You could soon use AI to generate comments on Instagram
Meta is reportedly testing a new feature that harnesses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically generate comments for Instagram posts. The discovery was made by Jonah Manzano, a well-known social media feature tester, who came across a "Write with Meta AI" prompt on Instagram. This prompt offers users AI-generated suggestions for comments on their friends' posts.
How It Works
The AI-generated comment feature can be accessed by clicking on a pencil icon located next to the text input bar underneath a post. Once activated, Meta AI analyzes the image and presents three comment suggestions. For instance, if you're looking to comment on a picture of someone smiling with a thumbs-up in their living room, Meta AI might propose responses like "Cute living room setup," "Love the cozy atmosphere," or "Great photo shoot location." Users have the option to refresh for additional suggestions if the initial ones are unsatisfactory.
Official Confirmation
A spokesperson from Meta verified the testing of this feature in a statement to TechCrunch, mentioning, "We regularly experiment with new features to integrate Meta AI across our suite of apps." They further noted that Meta AI will be incorporated into comments, feeds, groups, and search functionalities to enrich user experiences. Nevertheless, Meta has not specified when this test feature will be made widely available.
Concerns and Reactions
The prospect of AI-generated comments on Instagram has sparked concerns among users who value authentic interactions. Many individuals believe that genuine comments from friends hold more value compared to those generated by AI, which might come across as insincere. This development follows Meta's previous trial of AI-generated comment summaries on Facebook last year. The timeline for a potential broader rollout of this feature by Meta remains uncertain.
