OpenAI just launched advanced voice mode for audio chats with ...
ChatGPT is now equipped for more natural audio conversations. OpenAI recently introduced an enhanced voice feature for its premium service users, enabling smoother interactions and more fluid conversations.
The release of this new capability is currently underway and will be rolled out gradually over the week. Unfortunately, this feature is not yet available in several European countries, including EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Voice Feature Inspired by Sky from "Her"
In May, OpenAI unveiled this advanced voice mode, which garnered significant attention due to its resemblance to the voice of Sky, reminiscent of Scarlett Johansson's character in the 2013 film "Her." Legal issues arose when Johansson's representatives claimed that OpenAI did not have the rights to use a voice so similar to hers, leading to a temporary pause in its use in OpenAI products.
Subsequently, users were able to customize ChatGPT to interact with them in various voices through a free tier. The advanced version now offers improved responsiveness, with the ability to pause and listen when interrupted. Users can choose from nine different voices and set voice preferences in the app's Customizations settings.
Competitive Landscape
OpenAI, supported by Microsoft, faces increasing competition within the generative AI chatbot market. Google recently introduced its Gemini Live voice feature for English on Android devices, while Meta is planning to launch celebrity voices accessible through Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
OpenAI initially entered the market with ChatGPT in late 2022, boasting over 200 million weekly active users by August. The advanced voice mode is exclusive to subscribers of OpenAI's Plus, Team, or Enterprise plans, starting at $20 per month.
Getting Started with Advanced Voice Mode
To access the advanced voice mode, ensure that you have the latest version of the ChatGPT app installed on your device. Upon authorization from OpenAI, users will receive a notification within the app to activate the new feature.
Create a new chat within the app and select ChatGPT, then tap the sound wave icon to enable voice mode. Simply start speaking, and ChatGPT will respond promptly. Users can also adjust the speed and accents of the voice to suit their preferences.
While advanced voice mode offers various applications, such as storytelling, interview preparation, and language practice, users are subject to daily rate limits based on their subscription tier. Transitioning between text and voice conversations or between standard and advanced voice mode is not currently supported.
