OpenAI launches ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode on web but ...
OpenAI has recently introduced the Advanced Voice mode for the ChatGPT desktop. This feature was initially launched in September but was restricted to iOS and Android apps. However, it is now being extended to the web, allowing users to access it through their browsers.
The announcement of this update was made through an X post. The Advanced Voice mode is designed to enhance the conversational experience on ChatGPT and is currently being rolled out to paying users such as Plus, Enterprise, Teams, or Edu subscribers.
Exploring Advanced Voice Mode
To initiate a voice conversation on the web, users can click on the Voice icon located at the bottom-right corner of ChatGPT's prompt window. It is important to grant the browser permission to access the computer's microphone. Once the voice chat begins, users will be directed to a screen featuring a blue orb at the center.
ChatGPT presents nine distinct output voices, each with its unique tone and personality. This upgraded voice interaction aims to sound natural, convey emotions, modulate tone, and emphasize certain words for a more lifelike experience.
The Introduction of New Voices
OpenAI has introduced five new voices for ChatGPT: Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale, in addition to the existing voices Breeze, Juniper, Cove, and Ember. These new options are intended to facilitate engaging and natural dialogues, contributing to a personalized AI conversation experience.
The voice selections are inspired by nature, aligning with OpenAI's goal of ensuring smooth, comfortable, and familiar interactions. For instance, users can opt for Arbor, described as "easygoing and versatile," or Ember, known for being "confident and optimistic."
Usage and Accessibility
Kevin Weil, OpenAI's chief product officer, has mentioned that the Advanced Voice mode will eventually be available to free users in the upcoming weeks. However, Plus and Team subscribers may encounter daily usage limits, which can vary. Users will receive notifications when they are close to exhausting their daily voice usage.
Free users will also have the opportunity to preview the feature on a monthly basis. Notably, the Sky voice, which bore similarities to Hollywood actor Scarlett Johansson's voice, has been temporarily suspended following legal action taken by Johansson.
Following the controversy, OpenAI removed the voice, named 'Sky,' as it was not intended to mimic Johansson's voice despite initial references. The company swiftly addressed the concerns to ensure a positive user experience.
