EXCLUSIVE: Meta AI launches in Middle East, extends support for Arabic
Meta has officially launched its AI assistant, Meta AI, in the Middle East and North Africa region, powered by the company’s latest Llama 3.2 large language model. This AI assistant is now available across all Meta platforms and products, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Fares Akkad, Meta’s regional director, mentioned in an exclusive interview with Arab News that the rollout of Meta AI is gradual. While many users can already see Meta AI on their apps, others will be receiving it in the coming weeks.
Expanding Reach
Initially announced at the Connect event in 2023, Meta AI is now expanding its reach across the region, including countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq. Akkad highlighted the extended support for the Arabic language as well.
Meta AI is already accessible via desktop devices, with some countries potentially gaining access sooner than others. Akkad assured that efforts are being made to ensure millions of users in the Middle East can benefit from this growth.
Accessibility and Safety
One of the significant advantages of Meta AI, according to Akkad, is its accessibility. Built directly into Meta's apps, users do not need to download or sign up for anything new. Akkad emphasized that Meta AI is free to use and will continue to be so.
Furthermore, Meta AI being device agnostic and integrated into Meta's apps is a game-changer for AI adoption. This integration democratizes access to advanced AI tools, making them available not only to tech-savvy individuals but also to everyday users.
Safeguards and Responsibility
Despite the benefits of generative AI, there have been concerns regarding the spread of misinformation. Akkad assured that Meta has implemented safeguards in Meta AI to ensure its helpfulness and responsibility.
Measures include built-in filters to prevent the generation of harmful or misleading content. Meta continuously updates its AI models based on feedback and training every two weeks.

To address concerns about the authenticity of AI-generated content, Meta ensures that AI-created images have clear watermarks, hidden markers, and embedded metadata. This helps users distinguish between AI-generated and real images.
