Google Docs Gets Upgraded With Gemini AI-Powered 'Help Me Create' Feature
Google Docs is introducing a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature called 'Help me create', which allows users to generate fully formatted documents from scratch. This feature is currently available for Google Workspace users in early access. With 'Help me create', users can leverage context from files saved in their Workspace account to create new documents. According to Google, this feature can be used for creating a variety of documents such as proposals, blog posts, press releases, dinner party menus, and more.
New AI-Powered Features
Last month, Google added an AI-powered text-to-image generation tool to Google Docs. The tech giant has now detailed the 'Help me create' feature in Google Docs on its support pages. This feature is part of Gemini for Google Workspace Alpha and is accessible through the company's early access testing program. While it will be available to all eligible users, a global rollout is expected at a later date.

Once rolled out, users will find the 'Help me create' feature at the top of a blank page on Google Docs, alongside other options like Meeting notes, Cover images, and Polls. Users can also access this feature manually by navigating to File > New > Help me create.
How It Works

When users tap on the 'Help me create' feature, a pop-up window will appear with a text field where users can input their prompts. They can either provide a general prompt for the content they wish to create or select a Workspace file by typing '@' followed by the file name. Users can then click on the Create button to allow Gemini to generate a fully formatted document based on the prompt or the content from the selected file.
Google suggests using natural language prompts in a conversational tone to maximize the effectiveness of the tool. However, there are some limitations to the feature. It is currently only available on desktop, meaning the Google Docs mobile app does not support this AI feature. Additionally, the tool cannot integrate web search results or search through Workspace files unless they are specifically tagged. 'Help me create' also cannot produce cover or inline images of individuals. It is designed to extract content from Workspace files but does not comprehend the structure or formatting of the source file.
