Volkswagen Adds ChatGPT To Most U.S. Vehicles 09/05/2024
Volkswagen of America has announced that it will be adding ChatGPT to most of its 2025 Volkswagen models sold in the United States. This move makes Volkswagen the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as a standard feature in its vehicles.
The integration of ChatGPT was first revealed by Volkswagen at CES, with the initial rollout in vehicles in Europe in the second quarter of the year. Starting September 6, ChatGPT will be available in U.S. vehicles, starting with the 2025 Jetta and Jetta GLI models, as well as the 2024 ID.4 vehicles equipped with an 82-kWh battery.
This integration will provide both existing and new customers with access to an artificial intelligence database through Volkswagen's IDA voice assistant powered by Cerence Chat Pro. The voice assistant aims to deliver a sophisticated and user-friendly voice prompting experience for users.
ChatGPT Features and Privacy
For customers concerned about data privacy, Volkswagen emphasizes that ChatGPT does not access vehicle data. Any session-contextual data is promptly deleted to ensure maximum data protection for users.
Current owners of compatible 2024 ID.4 vehicles with an active Plus Speech subscription will have ChatGPT functionality automatically activated. Additionally, 2025 ID.4 models, including those with the 62-kWh battery, will be ChatGPT-ready later in the year. Most 2025 Volkswagen models will offer Plus Speech with AI as they are introduced to the market.
The ID.4 and ID. Buzz models will come with three years of included Plus Speech with AI, while the GTI, Golf R, and Tiguan will offer one year included with the purchase of the vehicle. Owners of Jetta, Jetta GLI, and Taos vehicles will have the option to purchase a Plus Speech with AI subscription through the myVW mobile app. ChatGPT will be integrated into the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models in 2026.
Enhanced User Experience with Cerence Chat Pro
Cerence Chat Pro, an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration, enhances the functionality of the Plus Speech subscription by utilizing generative AI. In addition to controlling navigation, infotainment, and climate adjustments, Volkswagen's IDA voice assistant can now answer general knowledge questions and engage in natural, human-like conversations with users.
Activation of the voice assistant can be done by saying "Hello IDA" or "Hello Volkswagen" (depending on the vehicle model) or by pressing a button on the steering wheel. This new integration allows for more expressive interactions, where users can communicate their needs in a conversational manner.
When the car's local system is unable to fulfill a request, it will connect to the cloud where Cerence Chat Pro processes the query using various sources, including ChatGPT, to provide responses to a wide range of queries. This advanced functionality enables the IDA voice assistant to handle complex, conversational questions beyond standard automotive functions, enhancing the overall driving experience.
