WhatsApp Beta update: WhatsApp is getting a dedicated AI chatbot
Meta is currently testing a redesigned WhatsApp interface that prominently features its suite of AI chatbots. The updated design, available to Android beta users, introduces a dedicated AI tab on the app's home screen, providing easy access to Meta's AI-powered features.
Dedicated Meta AI tab on WhatsApp
The new AI tab on WhatsApp replaces the Communities tab, with the Communities feature now integrated into the Chats tab. This dedicated section highlights "Popular AI characters" and categorizes other chatbots by topic, making AI tools more user-friendly. These chatbots, currently accessible in select countries like the US, can create AI-powered images, stickers, and perform searches using Meta AI.
In addition to the AI tab, WhatsApp is experimenting with a feature that allows users to create personalized AI characters. Previously, this functionality was confined to Meta's AI Studio on the Instagram website. By bringing this capability to WhatsApp, the process is simplified, potentially boosting user interaction with customizable bots.
Availability
Although these AI tools are initially limited to specific countries and languages, they are currently accessible through the main Chats tab. The introduction of a dedicated AI tab suggests Meta's commitment to enhancing the visibility and usability of these features. The WhatsApp beta, containing this new design, can be accessed through Google Play. However, beta tester slots are limited, and no official timeline has been provided for the wider release of the AI tab. The update is expected to remain restricted to regions where Meta's AI functionalities are already available.
