New Gemini Update Could Soon Let You Make Calls on Locked Devices
Google could soon roll out a new update for its Gemini AI assistant, which will allow users to make calls on locked devices. An APK teardown of the Google app has revealed this upcoming feature, indicating that users will be able to make calls and send messages even when their smartphones are locked. Currently, only Google Assistant supports this functionality, but it is expected to expand to Gemini soon.
According to the findings in the Google app's version "version 15.42.30.28.arm64 beta", users will simply need to activate the Gemini assistant by saying "Hey Google," followed by the recipient's name to initiate a call. This eliminates the need to unlock the Android smartphone altogether.
Google plans to introduce a new toggle in the Google app to enable or disable this feature. It's important to note that while Gemini will allow calls to be made on locked devices, it will still prompt users to unlock the device when the response contains personal content such as Gmail messages.
Changes to Gemini Interface
Aside from the call functionality, there are also anticipated user interface changes for Gemini. One notable change includes a more minimalistic floating overlay, providing a cleaner look and improved visibility when typing. Additionally, Google intends to categorize Gemini extensions into specific groups like Communication, Device Control, Travel, Media, and Productivity. The number of example commands displayed is also set to reduce from three to one.
These changes are currently undergoing testing with a limited number of users, suggesting that it may take some time for the feature to be widely available in the stable version of the Google app.
