Google launches latest AI tools to support developers
Google has been investing in artificial intelligence (AI) for over a decade. During the recent Google I/O Connect Bengaluru 2024 event, the tech giant introduced a range of tools and programs aimed at aiding developers in creating AI solutions. Google is concentrating on three major AI opportunity areas in India: multimodal, multilingual, and mobile.
Expansion of AI Models
Google is extending access to its AI models Gemini and Gemma and is introducing new language tools from Google DeepMind India. Gemini is a multimodal model that can process text, image, video, code, and more. Google DeepMind India is focused on providing open-source resources to assist developers in building language solutions for India.
IndicGenBench for Indian Languages
Google is introducing IndicGenBench, a tool specifically designed for Indian languages. This resource covers 29 languages and aids in evaluating and refining language models, ensuring accurate representation of India's linguistic diversity.
Gemma 2 Release
Gemma, a family of open models, has released Gemma 2, the next generation of open models. These models demonstrate improved performance and are available in 9 billion and 27 billion parameter sizes, optimized for next-gen GPUs by NVIDIA. Gemma also runs on a single TPU host in Vertex AI by Google.
Matformer Framework
Google introduced the Matformer framework, developed by the Google DeepMind team in India, to enhance on-device AI capabilities. This framework allows developers to combine different-sized Gemini models within a single framework, optimizing for both performance and resource efficiency.
Google Vice President Ambharish Kenghe stated, "AI is a powerful enabler that necessitates a reimagination of boundaries. The possibilities with multimodal, mobile, and multilingual AI are extensive."
Additional Announcements
Google also unveiled Google Wallet APIs to streamline loyalty program, ticket, and gift card integration. Developers using Google Maps Platform will benefit from India-specific pricing. Additionally, Google is collaborating with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to offer up to 90% discounts on select Google Maps Platform APIs for developers building on the ONDC platform.
