OpenAI launches GPTo, improving ChatGPT's text, visual and audio capabilities
OpenAI has introduced a new artificial intelligence model that enhances ChatGPT's abilities to handle text, visual, and audio inputs. This latest update brings features that allow the AI to mimic human cadences in its responses and even attempt to sense people's moods.
The concept may remind some of the 2013 movie "Her," where the protagonist develops feelings for an artificially intelligent operating system. While the new model may not evoke such emotions, OpenAI states that it operates faster than its predecessors and can analyze text, audio, and video seamlessly in real-time.
The newly launched GPT-4o, also known as "omni," will power the ChatGPT chatbot. OpenAI has announced that this advanced model will soon be accessible to users, including those utilizing the free version.
During a brief live-streamed update, the company revealed these developments. CEO Sam Altman, although absent from the event, shared a single word "her" on the social media platform X. Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and other executives demonstrated the AI bot's capabilities, showcasing real-time conversational skills with added emotional elements upon request.
The AI model illustrated its problem-solving skills by guiding through math equations and assisting in software coding tasks on-screen. Additionally, it attempted to analyze a person's emotional state through a selfie video, accurately determining the individual's mood based on facial expressions.
Moreover, the AI showcased language translation capabilities by converting text between English and Italian, exemplifying its potential to facilitate multilingual conversations.
Expert Insights on OpenAI's Latest Update
Gartner analyst Chirag Dekate provided insights on the update, acknowledging OpenAI's efforts while referencing potential competition from industry giants. Dekate noted similarities between OpenAI's showcase and advanced demos presented by Google in their Gemini 1.5 pro launch.
While OpenAI initially led with innovations like ChatGPT and GPT-3, Dekate highlighted emerging capability gaps compared to competitors, particularly Google. Google is set to unveil updates to its own AI model, Gemini, at its upcoming I/O developer conference.
This development indicates a dynamic landscape in the AI industry, with key players constantly pushing boundaries and introducing enhanced capabilities to meet evolving user needs.
