Google's Generative AI Model Gemini
Google's generative AI model Gemini is set to revolutionize the way we use Google Maps and Waze. This innovative technology will transform these platforms into personalized recommendations engines, offering curated experiences and suggestions tailored to users' preferences and search history.
Traditionally, users have relied on Maps for navigation purposes and for discovering new places. However, with the introduction of Gemini, the platform will now provide customized recommendations in response to specific queries such as "what are the best activities to do with out-of-state friends." This shift in functionality will enable users to seek information beyond simple directions, allowing them to inquire about the ambiance of a venue or location.
The integration of Gemini's reasoning and summarization capabilities will leverage data from approximately 250 million global locations, as well as insights gathered from the Maps community. These new features will initially be available in the U.S. on both Android and iOS devices.
Future Enhancements on Search
In the upcoming months, similar enhancements are planned for Google Search, hinting at a potential integration of Search and Maps. These updates will introduce AI-powered review summaries, the ability to ask detailed questions about specific places, and improvements to the Immersive View experience, allowing users to virtually explore stadiums, parks, and routes.
Immersive View will receive enhancements that utilize AI, imagery, and computer vision to provide users with a realistic preview of locations, including weather and traffic conditions. Additionally, navigation features will be upgraded to offer detailed insights such as the number of lanes in a road or crosswalk, road signs, and lane merging instructions. The expansion of Immersive View to 150 cities globally and the inclusion of new destinations like college campuses will further enrich the user experience.
Furthermore, route planning will be enhanced with additional details on complex turns and estimated arrival times, with updates rolling out on Android and iOS platforms.
