How to turn off Meta AI on Facebook comment summaries
Another day, another AI feature that no one asked for. Users of Meta products, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, have been searching for ways to disable specific features since the company integrated AI in April. Users have shared tips on how to silence functions like Meta AI search and chat, but completely turning off Meta AI seems currently impossible.
Despite the lack of a universal kill switch, there are ways to limit some of the more intrusive components, including those that may be turned on by default without your knowledge. One such feature is "comment summaries," which uses AI to generate brief summaries of comments on posts, aiming to encapsulate commenters' opinions and statements about the post's content.
Disabling Comment Summaries
USA TODAY has contacted Meta for clarification on the selection and use of posts and comments for content summaries. Although details are still pending, Facebook's Help Center notes that this function is available for "some Page posts with a large number of comments." The default setting for Meta AI comment summaries raises privacy concerns among users who are reluctant to have their online content utilized for machine learning purposes.
If you prefer not to have your comments summarized by Meta AI, you can opt-out using a few simple steps. Although opting out may not prevent your content from contributing to Meta AI's training data, it will prevent these potentially inaccurate summaries from showing up in your feed. If you desire complete disengagement, discontinuing the use of Meta platforms is the most effective solution.
