This milestone marks the first time ChatGPT has secured the top spot in monthly downloads, signifying its growing popularity. Between Q1 2024 and Q1 2025, ChatGPT's downloads surged by an impressive 148%.
By the end of March 2025, ChatGPT introduced the '4o Image Generation' feature powered by GPT-4o, known for its exceptional image generation capabilities. Within a week of its launch, this feature gained immense traction, generating over 700 million images.
However, according to Appfigures analysis, the surge in ChatGPT's popularity cannot be attributed solely to its new features. CEO Ariel Michaeli highlighted that ChatGPT has become synonymous with AI in the minds of many users, akin to Google's association with search. This strong brand recognition poses a significant challenge to competitors in the AI space.
Market Dynamics
Notably, TikTok, which claimed the third spot in total downloads during the same period, experienced a substantial spike in downloads from February to March 2025. This resurgence can be linked to TikTok's return to app stores following the 'TikTok Ban Act' incident.
Appfigures reported that the top 10 apps collectively amassed 339 million downloads in March 2025, up from 299 million in February, indicating a growing app market.
